Only 6 minutes by car from Hotel Son Jaumell, you will find Rancho Cala Mesquida (Cala Medquida Ranch) which opened its doors in 1971. For 40 years, they have been offering horse riding activities to visitors searching for tranquility and the pleasure of riding in the beautiful natural environment of Cala Mesquida (Mesquida Cove). From April to October, you can enjoy this unique experience, which combines sports, nature, relaxation, and fabulous views. Lorenzo Llull and his daughter Mar, Directors of the Ranch, explain why so many people return to Majorca again and again to re-live this fantastic experience.
The horse riding trails in the Cala Mesquida area of Majorca, take you through pine forests, passing by beautiful sand dunes and arriving at a nearby stream. This type of trail lasts approximately one hour and is recommended for adults and kids in groups of 8-9 people maximum. They offer horse riding holidays suitable for everyone: entire families, teens with riding experience, elderly riders, or couples in search of a more romantic experience.
From the incredible pine forest of Cala Mesquida, different routes can be taken depending on the level of each person or group. Although the fabulous Cala Mesquida beach is nearby, riders are not allowed direct access during high season due to the great number of visitors enjoying the sun. However, you will be able to make out a breathtaking view of Cala Mesquida from the stream.
The stables at Rancho Cala Mesquida house 11 horses and 11 ponies. “Nenuco, Aina and Ringo are the ponies that have been with us the longest and as for horses, they would be Tina, Pinxo and Luna,” says Mar Llull. Then there is Viri, the “sea horse” and Ufano which Mar´s father, Lorenzo has the pleasure of riding. Mar also points out that “it is generally the landscape and the elegance of our horses that captivate people.” She reveals the secret to why so many people come back to the ranch for this experience when they take their holidays to Majorca.
In October, the Ranch closes so they can ensure that their horses are well-cared for and get the rest they need by grazing in the pasture and running free in the mountains. According to Mar, “The physical and mental well-being of the horses are very important to us, so unless we have a group that has booked ahead of time, we don´t usually bring them back down from the mountains until March.”
There are so many activities you can enjoy during your stay at Hotel Son Jaumell. Horse riding is a fantastic way to do sports on your holidays to Majorca while enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings and the peace and tranquilty it offers.
Being in contact with nature while doing sports is the reasons that many people opt for horse riding holidays in Majorca. “We are very lucky to be in this environment. As Mar Llull points out, “When someone enters the forest, they are able to disconnect from the outside world and connect with nature.”
